What dandruff actually is
Dandruff refers to visible flaking of the scalp, often alongside some itchiness. It's one of the most common scalp concerns people search for, and while several factors are commonly discussed as contributors, it's genuinely common and usually manageable rather than a sign of a serious underlying problem.
Common management approaches
A gentle, regular cleansing routine and a scalp toner or treatment formulated for flaking are the typical starting points. Avoiding very hot water (which can dry and irritate the scalp further) and not over-washing or under-washing are both reasonable general habits.
When to see a dermatologist
If flaking is severe, persistent despite a reasonable routine, spreading, or accompanied by significant redness, soreness or hair loss in the area, a dermatologist can identify the specific cause and recommend a more targeted treatment than over-the-counter scalp care alone.

Frequently asked questions
Dryness is one commonly discussed contributor, though dandruff can also occur on oilier scalps - it’s not exclusively a dry-scalp issue.
